Skopelos

Skopelos is located between the islands of Skiathos and Alonissos, not far from the coast of Pelion which is on mainland Greece. The most striking thing about Skopelos is its approximately eight million pine trees that create beautiful dense forests and make Skopelos the greenest island in Greece. Thus, it is known for its hiking trails; many tourists who are familiar with the island come back regularly to Skopelos to walk and enjoy the beautiful nature.

Skopelos has also many small sandy and pebble beaches with azure waters. Some of them are accessible by car; others are not, because of the hilly, sometimes steep relief of the coastline. If you sail around Skopelos by boat, you can dive in the magnificent waters of these lovely beaches. Otherwise, you can reach them on foot.

Chora, on the northern coast, is the capital of the island. Its ancient name was Peparithos, after the son of the god Dionysos and Ariadne, who was the first inhabitant of the island. Chora nestles comfortably on a hill and sprawls around a castle. The medieval castle with its sweeping views of the Aegean, the stone houses with picture-perfect courtyards, narrow paved streets and a number of Byzantine churches, encapsulates the essence of a typical Greek island settlement. Take a trip through the rich history of the island with a visit to the Folklore Museum, housed in a renovated mansion built in the previous century, where you can enjoy a rich collection of folklore-related exhibits or visit some of the 380 churches and monasteries of the island.
