Kastoria

Kastoria region is breathtakingly beautiful. It is a mountainous region with high and low mountains, rivers, and lakes. The capital Kastoria is a real pearl, it is located on the shores of the lake of the same name, also called Lake Orestiada.

The city is built on the edge of the lake and at the same time on a peninsula that extends far into the lake. The houses in the town are a mixture of modern houses and traditional mansions. The houses on the peninsula are partly on the slopes of a mountain; here you can see many Byzantine and Post-Byzantine churches that were built in the middle Ages. In the city, on the banks of the river, you can find many nice traditional and modern restaurants and cafeterias. It is very cozy and picturesque in the Doltso and Apozari districts. A road runs around the lake and the peninsula, where you will see many cyclists and joggers. Here on the peninsula is the Cave of the Dragon, several beautiful churches, and the monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa. You can reach the top of the hill on the peninsula by car or on foot. From above and especially from Agios Thanasis and Profitis Ilias you have an impressive view over the lake, the city, and the whole region up to the mountains Vitsi and Grammos.
